BMW's SUVs have always placed more emphasis on sport rather than utility, and the redesigned 2007 X5 continues in that tradition. The X5 is one of the few SUVs that wears a "tuned at the Nurburgring" label. The 260-horsepower 3.0L in-line six is the base engine, and a 4.8L V8 with double overhead camshafts and four-valves-per cylinder is available. The V8 produces a rousing 350 horsepower. Both engines are matched with six-speed automatic transmissions and are outfitted with a sport-tuned suspension. All the features you would expect to find standard on a $55,000 vehicle are present, including xenon adaptive headlights, rain-sensing windshields, power and memory functions, stability control, and dual zone automatic climate control. A tire pressure monitor, dynamic cruise control, and BMW's famed iDrive system are also present. When opting for the V8, leather seat trim, 18-inch alloys, self-leveling rear suspension, and interior walnut trim are added. A Premium Package is available with either engine, and it outfits the X5 with a universal garage door opener, a panoramic moonroof, auto-dimming rearview mirrors, among other items. A Sport Package adds 19-inch wheels, run-flat tires, electronic damping control, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel. A number of other packages are available for an enhanced audio experience, cold-weather motoring, and overall comfort. A third row seat can be ordered for those who want to seat seven people.
